As we approach Christmas and the festive season, it’s okay to enjoy some sugary treats and help protect your teeth. Read on for some simple tips

There’s no doubt that we eat a lot of sugary foods at Christmas time. From candy canes to chocolate to pavlova and other cakes and desserts, Christmas is a time of feasting on delicious, but often unhealthy, foods.

While sugar is a common core ingredient in many celebratory foods, unfortunately it can cause damage to our teeth. Cavities are heavily influenced by the food we eat and how well we take care of our teeth. Both children and adults are at risk of cavities.

Cavities, tooth decays and weakness are caused by a major build up of plaque and tartar, which can be hard to clean out thoroughly. There are a number of preventative methods of care that you and your dentist can take.

Preventative care

Preventative care includes regular cleans, sealants, fluoride, and x-rays.

Preventative treatment is never a bad idea, especially around Christmas time when so many sugary foods are consumed. Although a busy time for everyone, regular dentist visits and preventative treatments are the key to a healthy cavity free smile, as they allow you to avoid more costly potential dental problems.

Lets look at how you and help protect your teeth during the festive season with these simple tips:

Eat sweets at meal times. The saliva produced while eating helps counteract the effects of decay-causing bacteria. Enjoying lollies between meals will not have the same benefit.

•             Limit between-meals snacks. Avoid grazing. Constant eating threatens enamel health by exposing your teeth to an acid environment for a long time. Set meal times and keep to routine

•             Choose your sweets carefully. Stay away from gooey sweets like gummies, hard lollies and caramels, Sugar free lollies or gum is a better option

•             Drink plenty of water. Rinse mouth immediately after eating sweets.

•             Brush and floss twice a day. Reduce the build-up of plaque by proper brushing and flossing. 

•             See your dentist regularly
