Australians Neglect Oral Care

Dental Health Week 7-13 August 2017

A recent survey commissioned by the

Australian Dental Association,

revealed that only 51% of Australians brush twice-a-day, only 17% floss regularly, and only 35% visit their dentist at the recommended frequency.

Dr Sushma Patel from Putney Dental Surgery understands that people have to juggle a bewildering array of work and life activities; both theirs and their kids and scheduling time for a whole host of appointments can be a challenge. Unfortunately, that means many things fall by the wayside including Oral Health which people see as an expendable part of their day.

As we all know it’s anything but, and so this year’s Dental Health Week encourages Australians of all ages to consider taking care of their oral health as an intrinsically important part of their average day, something they can easily fold into their hectic schedule, no matter where they are. This means that whether you are a parent rushing to get your child to a sports activity, a commuter running for the train or a university student racing between classes, you still have time to brush and floss your teeth and make regular appointments with your dentists for check-ups and cleans.

Dr Patel encourages all Australians, no matter what their stage of life, to set aside time for their oral health. She stresses that it is important and necessary to fit caring for your teeth and gums into an already busy schedule. After all, we find the time to get our cars serviced and our hair styled so why not care for our teeth, which is arguably far more important than many other activities we undertake.
